I'm trying to record something for vinyl with very little experience. What happens to the sound of a recording when you put it to vinyl? Does it get kinda compressed like when you put it to cassette?

This is not the most direct answer to your question, but Masterdisk's Scott Hull (who's mastered: Sting, Bob Dylan, Steely Dan, Uncle Tupelo, and many, many, many more) is currently writing a series of article over at the Vinyl District about mastering to vinyl. He discusses the process, the peculiarities, and the importance of various things throughout his incredibly informative articles. It's well worth a read for anyone interested in recording, mastering, or vinyl.

Here's the first article: TVD’s On the Record with Masterdisk’s Scott Hull

and if you go here, you can get the others in the series: Search Results for: scott hull

p.s. He's been writing them once a week on Fridays, so there's more on the way.
