Do some more reading on this site. Look in the mic forum, and recording techniques forum.
Do you have the money to spend on some equipment? What soundcard do you have? If it's a stock soundcard, you won't get good results. You will need at least a pre amp and a good soundcard to get started. Answer the questions I have asked, and we can take it from there.
Also, what is your processor speed and how much RAM do you have and what size harddrive in your laptop. And do you have an external harddrive?

You will need a preamp for the microphone.

The absolute crappiest mic you should buy is a SM57. Actually 57's are ok for some things and any studio, big or small, will have a few around for things like snare or electric guitar. (Although personally I prefer a MD421.)
