will i be able to record 4 tracks at once using a behringer 1202 mixer hooked up to an e-mu 1212m using n-track studio? how would i connect the mixer to the soundcard?

No. The 1202 does not have enough outputs. You'd need something with either channel inserts or direct outs on each channel or 4 aux sends.

what mixer would you recommend for 4-channel simulataneous recording?

I fenagle 4 tracks out of a BEHRINGER EURORACK MXB-1002.

Using the 2 "inserts" and then the stereo output, hard-panned out.
For a total of 4, which I then have to pan out in the mix.
It's a low-budget mixer at about $100 US.

To record any number of tracks at once ... you need a soundcard that offers the same amount of inputs as the number of tracks you want.
The uses of a mixer are for ...
a) Using the pre amps and the direct outs to give you a line level to the soundcard. (this is if the soundcard you use doesn't have any pre's or not enough)
b) Take multiple inputs and group them to 2, 4, 6, 8 ... etc output busses to then go to the soundcard (depending on the number of busses the mixer offers). A small cheap mixer ain't gonna offer much.
c) Offer direct monitoring of whats being recorded and, with proper routing, whats been recorded at the same time.

There are many other uses for a mixer in the setup, but the above are the most common.

Take a look at Ethan Winers article on Using a Mixer with a DAW

Also have a look at TweakHeadz on soundcards. Matter of fact .... navigate through all of the links on the left side of the guide. Some good info.
