I want to record hip hop (vocals) as well as metal(guitar/drums). Here's what I have so far:

Digitech RP350
some XLR and 1/4 mics
a Roland Cube CM-30 monitor (has a bunch of inputs on the back)
I use a Toshiba Satellite L505 laptop to record
I use Audacity and LMMS for making beats

My main problem it seems is that when I record onto audacity, the sound is very quiet. So what I need is a preamp to fix that? Any suggestions?

Or do you think it might be best to get a multitrack recorder like the Zoom R8 or something? My main concerns are possible lag from the computer, and quiet recordings.

Thanks

You didn't mention your audio interface. Are you recording through the built-in sound device on the laptop?

I guess my audio interface would be the RP350. It has I/O for 1/4 jacks and USB connectivity, which I then feed into Audacity. It just records too quiet.

I do have a VOX Tonelab ST as multieffects pedal which comes with USB, but its mainly to be used to edit the tones, etc but never as an audio interface; its just not made for that. So I agree with Diggy_dude, you need to add an audio interface to get a decent result.

I have an RP90, and I'm not convinced the RP series would make a suitable interface even if that's what they were made for.
