Hi,

Well got cakewalk up and running with alot of help from James (cheers!) and i just want to see if anyone had any thoughts on best way for me to set up to record a band, with the gear i have.

Basically i have been in bands for ages so know a little about PA setup etc and have flirted with sequencers before, but my main thing is Guitar & Bass. What i want to do is see if i can produce good quality EP's etc outside of the studio - our setup is drums/two guitars/bass and a singer (shouter).

'studio 'Gear at my disposal is a

PC with onboard soundcard /cakewalk
4 track portastudio
Alesis midiverb
Practice marshall
a dodgy patch bay
loads of various leads
shure mic
band pa mixer (12 channel peavey - new this year)

Is the best way to always go thru the 4track>PC or would i be better borrowing the band mixer ? when people talk about preamp is it just getting a good signal with eq before it gets to the soundcard thats important ?

And say if i want to record something with effects on my guitar - do i just mic up the amp and play thru the mixer/4 track ? - plus when recording the drums, same again just mic him up say with three mics thru mixer then into pc ?

I have only used the midiverb for the odd delay now and then on my amp..im sure it can do more :)

My plan for the moment is just to hook up an old amp & speakers for monitoring to get a decent sound

Oh and please let me know if im posting in the wrong place here...i feel these are kind of newbie/basic questions :)

Cheers!
