I'm looking to try my hand at the actual production of the beat, vs. just mixing it.

I dont think I want to go the route of an MPC just yet, in case I dont like it.

I was thinking of something along the lines of a Pad Kontrol and a Keystation going into something like FL.

What options should I look into, and what might I want to stay away from?

nothing really to say stay away from use whatever u Feel comfortable with..

I don't know a whole lot about producing beats (just started getting into it a few months ago), but I would probably recommend an inexpensive usb/midi controller to go along w/ your software.

some suggestions

I would probably suggest that you get the M-Audio Trigger Finger as a Pad Control because I used it and it is extremly well built. Get that trigger finger and some MPC sound sample discs, load them into fruity loops and you can make some good quality sounding beats.

If you are looking for a nice cheap midi keyboard, I would suggest you first decide on how many keys you will be using. I personally preffer a keyboard with at least 49 keys because anything smaller just feels limiting. Even if you do not play with both hands that will change very soon so you are playing it safe to get a larger keyboard now. :o
