How do you get your drums to sound like that? I just listend to Get Free and Waiting for the messiah. WOW!!!
Staying at the studio allnight with alot of coffie
But, really, i just kept fooling around with tips that i got here and it finnaly got to sounding good. Most times i just use 4 mics (snare, kick and 2 overheads,) but for "Waiting For The Messiah" i used a room mic too. I set it up in the next room and left the door open. then i ran it straght into the recorder without compressing, although i did run it though a ART TBS tube=pre with the percussion preset. The snare was a "No-Name" Piccilo that i bought at a music store for $100. I tuned the head and top and bottom real tight and let it ring a little and put a sm57 about 2" iches about the head. For the kick, i took the front head off and and put a 2 pillows (one was big and the other was small) inthere, one on top of the other. then i tuned the back head ( factory head) down as low as it would go without rinkleing. Then i placed
the shure beta 52 on a small stand and set it right infront of the the kick facing right at the beater. i ran the kick mic though a Berhinger Composer and a Berhinger Ultra-graph
pro eq. the overheads was Mashall MXL 603s. i placed one about 2 stick lengths, above the hi-hat and the other the same distance, just over the ride. and for "Get Free" the drums was set up pretty much just how i explained it excep i used a 70's Slingerland snare drum for it and i did not have a room mic.
Glad that you liked the drum sounds
This was told to me along time ago and i still believe it:
"Experiment, Experiment and Experiment!"
