I read an article on the internet explaining how to record drums.
The article said once I have all my drum tracks recorded, compress and gate them after note before they go to track. Is this the correct way to get a good drum set sound?

It has been done either way successfully.
A lot depends on the recording medium as to whether it is analogue or digital, and the sound you are going after.

What kind of drum sound are you looking for?

Studio Standerd?

Rock?

Metal?

Punk?

ect,ect

What - exactly - is "studio standard sound" supposed to mean???????????

For a good drum sound, pretty much ignore the technology your using to capture the sound for the moment. The two most important things to getting a good drum sound is a kit that is tuned properly, and a decent drummer who is consistant. You will not get a good drum recording unless it is tuned properly.

Once your tuned and the drummer knows his way around the kit ignore what you have read about compression and what not. If you really dont understand compression and gating its best not to use it. As you wont have a specific goal youd be aiming for. It would be aimless processiong.

Staying at the studio allnight with alot of coffie :D

But, really, i just kept fooling around with tips that i got here and it finnaly got to sounding good. Most times i just use 4 mics (snare, kick and 2 overheads,) but for "Waiting For The Messiah" i used a room mic too. I set it up in the next room and left the door open. then i ran it straght into the recorder without compressing, although i did run it though a ART TBS tube=pre with the percussion preset. The snare was a "No-Name" Piccilo that i bought at a music store for $100. I tuned the head and top and bottom real tight and let it ring a little and put a sm57 about 2" iches about the head. For the kick, i took the front head off and and put a 2 pillows (one was big and the other was small) inthere, one on top of the other. then i tuned the back head ( factory head) down as low as it would go without rinkleing. Then i placed the shure beta 52 on a small stand and set it right infront of the the kick facing right at the beater. i ran the kick mic though a Berhinger Composer and a Berhinger Ultra-graph pro eq. the overheads was Mashall MXL 603s. i placed one about 2 stick lengths, above the hi-hat and the other the same distance, just over the ride. and for "Get Free" the drums was set up pretty much just how i explained it excep i used a 70's Slingerland snare drum for it and i did not have a room mic.

Glad that you liked the drum sounds :)

This was told to me along time ago and i still believe it:

"Experiment, Experiment and Experiment!"

here I thought that you were gonna tell me that you used "Drumkit from hell"samples. Man I was so hopeing you werent gonna tell me that you did. Makes me very frusterated about my own drums...

Don't worry. Just keep playing around with compressors and eq and mic and stuff, diffurent tuneing, ect,ect ultil you find the sound that you want. No one is gonna get it the first time. so try and try again. I don't use drum samples too much; Just when i'm working on a fast demo on the computer or if i need a electronic sound. Just keep browsing around this site for some good threads on this. If it wasn't for this site, i would not be where i was today :)

here's a good thread for you to look at: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=39030

One of my favorites!

i generally dont use any gates or anything on the kit in the tracking stage because once you cut something off you cant get it back!

there's a track for ya. the drummer was a big led zep fan.
