Im going be recording drum tracks this weekend but am short on mics unless i use some sm58's. Im kinda confused about comparisons between a 57 and 58.
One person says their basically the same the next says their not. At any rate im stuck throwing in some 58's cause thats all i have. Any input on placement would be cool. Here's what i plan on doing.

Snare sm57
rack 1 sm57
rack 2 sm57
floor tom sm58
floor tom 2 sm58
kick d-112

2 -mxl 990 overheads..... maybe.
Thanks!

Maybe??? I'd say the the overheads are the most important mics.

As a sidenote, if you're interested, this tune was recorded with all 57's on the drums, if I'm to believe what I read somewhere. I don't know why they do so much bragging about that, because I actually find it to be quite a dull sounding drum track. But at least it shows that even a "pro" act has used all 57's on drums, so you're in good company. :)

Were we ever???? :D :D :D

You may be right. I think what I don't like is the toms. They sound dead. But listening again after a few years, I have to say that they're probably tuned like that, and it's not the mics' fault.

I liked the snare and the kick.

just clean and cuttin through:)

Btw we used to be friends, way back when we used to hang over at Bob Saccamano's house:D

Hi,

SM 58's will sound fine on toms, even on snare they sound fine. They may not be my first choice, but I have used them and have got very good results.

By the way I turned up to mix an in house PA gig one night and all we had for the Kick was a SM58 (in fact they only had SM58's in the mic case), did a good job of that too.

The SM 58 is like the shifting spanner of the microphone tool kit.

Cheers

Alan.

Yea not my first choice either but im just stuck with what i have for now.
In my first few test recordings i couldnt hear a big difference between a 57 and 58. Thanks.

The sm57 and sm58 have a little differant frequency responses, I know that for sure, and the 58 is a little more of a popper stopper, but they are basically the same mic. If you are going to eq your toms anyways it shouldnt make too much of a differance bub.

What does the "maybe" mean about the overheads? Does it mean that you'll maybe use the 990's as overheads or...that you will maybe use overheads or maybe not use overheads?

I would definitely have overheads.

Everything else looks good, but heres another option depending on what kind of sound you're going for. You could take one of those tom mics and put it under the snare to get a little more of the snare sound. Like I said it just depends on what kind of drum sound you're going for. If you do have one under the snare...remember to reverse the polarity of one of them.

Yea im using the 990's for overheads but am having a hell of a time with the 58's...I keep getting buzzing sounds or something,,,very frustrating!
