In our recordings, we've gotten pleasing results with everything except the drum tracks. We've considered recording drum tracks in a reputable studio that gets great drums sounds and just bringing the tracks home and finishing the songs in our own studio. What complications/problems/tips can you tell me about if we were to do this?

Cross platforms is always a bitch. Plus some drummers need back up instruments to play, why not record the entire band live. It may cost a little more but may be worth it!

Id go with Wally if you can find a studio that supports the platform you will be working on...go ahead and do the basic tracks there with the whole band to get that feel....in the end you may only keep the drums, but you never know....there might be a killer guitar part or a bass part that just grooved perfectly...It shouldnt cost you any more to have the whole band rather than just the drummer...since studios will probably charge you by the hour, you may come off cheaper because the drummer will probably get it right in less takes because he will be more comfortable...imagine being alone in the studio drumming to a click track.....

Oh, well that's how we always recorded anyway..... we just play along with him while he records via direct input. We have him do stick clicks or hi-hat during the silences. It starts to be time consuming when we record the four tracks of guitar on top of that, and ESPECIALLY the vocals. Those are things we could easily do ourselves and then mix down the whole thing rather than paying someone to sit there and hit a record button for hours. We just need to "steal" someone's good equipment and expertise when recording the drums.

Not to mention the room you record the drums in.
