Hi there, I was wondering how you record a full drum kit into something like the Fostex MR8?

Do you mic all the drums and put them through a mixer?

Cheers!

Yes. But if the balance on the kit is bad, you'll have no way to correct it. Or if you want the snare to have a bit of reverb on it but the kik to be dry -- can't do that either. Not to mention on a mono track the drums will all be dead center. It's usually nice to pan toms and cymbals away from the center for a little more realism. With the whole kit on one track, all you can do is pan the whole kit.

So again, while you can do this, it's not the best way.

Ok so you are saying one track sucks! Thats great to know. I have only two recordable tracks at a time, so therefore, can I have toms and cymbals in two different tracks?

Cheers!

and thanks for your help!

You sure can...

if you pan and add reverb to certain mix tracks....how will it record onto the recorder???

Mono drums is no big deal. If I had to do drums with only two tracks I would find a good place in the room to setup one mic to capture the whole kit and add a kick mic for the other track. I have 24 tracks available and I use just 2-3 mics on drums.
