Next week we're going to record our first full cd in our homestudio.
I've recorded in pretty big studios before with some really good gear(not like that's a garantee for great sound, after all it's still the man behind it that does it) but now it's pretty lowbudged. It would be great if some of you guys with more experience then me(or less) would take a look at our recordingplans and gave some comments, advice and tips.. We'll be using a technique to record the drums that's not a standard so.. Maybe anyone hos done this before. Any tip would be great. Thanx a lot!!!
Our rec. gear is:
- pc pentium 4 2.4ghz/160gb HD/ 512MB ram
- protools digi 001
- genelec 1030
- BLUE baby bottle
- guitar pod
- bass pod
- shure sm 58 (x3)
- shure pg 57
- shure pg 56
- dap dk-5 Drum Mic Set
- Roland td-6 electronic drum
- some good sample cd's
Here's our plan how we would do it:
Our plan is to try to record al the drums in cubase SX using the td-6. This way we'll be able to perfectly soundreplace every track seperately using the protools soundreplacer pluginn. But then the hi-hatts and the overheads will be a problem. Because (I think) it's impossible to replace the midis with "real" sounding cymbals, no? So one option is to leave the hihatt- and cymbalpads and using real ones with some overhead micing. But if someone knows a better way... Also, I don't exactly know how to replace the toms so they still sound natural. I know in some bigger studios here in Belgium they are doing it all the time so.. it's possible. If someone could tell me how.
Guitar will be recorded either with the pod or with a brunnetti XL R-evo amplifier(www.brunetti.it) and the bottle.
The bass with the basspod.
And vocals with the bottle.(very dry) Probably we'll let sing in the vocalparts a few times and try to use the vocalign plugin. Don't know what this will give.
I tought of making the room as dry as possible(especially for the vocals) so we can add some ambient later(if we want too).
