I have a Peavey XXL half stack and I am planning on using it to record. I have recorded with it before and the sound I get out of it is not too great. I'm pretty sure its because of the cab. I was thinking about buying a cab just for recording, but I don't have a lot of money. I was looking at some 2x12 cabs because they're cheaper. I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions on what cabs I should check out, and if a 2x12 cab might be a better investment to save money (I would not plan to use the 2x12 live)

To start with, Peavey are not the best amps around, far from it really. But if you think it is the speakers then why not get some Messa Boogie speakers fitted to it. I dont think it would cost too much, probably cheaper than a new peavey cab or peavey amp. Using a 2x12 for recording is totally fine, so that could be a good idea getting a 2x12 just for recording.(That is if you are gigging alot). Place the 2x12 on a table if recording with one so the mic isnt too close to the ground and picking up tooo much bass frquencies. Spend a while trying to get a decent sound from your amp out the monitors in the studio or wherever before recording by using the eq on the amp and pick up selector on the guitar and using new strings and also eq on any fx units for your guitar. Dont use loads of distortion if using loads of distortion, as this will muffle the sound a bit and leave it lifeless.

i would suggest either a carvin 412t, the carvin legacy (w/vintage 30's), avatar cab (u can choose your speakers, check them out at www.avatarspeakers.com ), or just upgrade the speakers in your cab.

Actually, I prefer mic'ing a single speaker cab over a twin or a quad. Why not just get a green back in a nice, open backed cab?

wopuld a single speaker cab be able to handle the wattage?

+1

I used to think that 1x12 just couldn't sound as big as 2 or 4x12, but when you figure that you can dub, use post-dist. EQ, compression and pan, you can make a pretty (dare I say, really really) big sound with just one speaker.

no i dont mean would it get as loud I mean would the head blow out the speaker?

What kind of Music... and are you sure it's the cabinet... maybe a speaker replacement will do.

I play in a "screamo" band (I hate that word but I suppose it describes us well)

I second the avatar cabs. Best deal in quality speaker cabs right now. Fully customized 2x12 cab, high quality construction for $350. How can you beat that?

Mesa RECTO 2X12 (Vintage 30) is a great cab. I paid $325 on Ebay for mine.

im an idiot...i tried to give my cab the "mesa" and "marshall" sound....(really it's just with the celestions they use). i have 2 Vintage 30's on top and 2 G12t-75's on bottom. this way when i record a band they have a choice of two different speakers...or just me
