Is there a big difference that anyone has noticed when recording bass using a D/I box vs. directly into your interface?

The DI will match the high impedance of the guitar to the (usually) low impedance of pre-amps, and it is recommended. You can do a few quick takes to find out the best config and then let your ears decide. Leave some silence at the end of each take so you can also easily compare the background noise. Also try recording at different levels, then normalise the gain of each take within your computer... and compare.

That is good to know. I only asked because I've always been taught to use a D/I box and never really tried recording bass without it.

So follow your original question.... try without the DI, it will take you a matter of minutes... try recording everything your own way.

Ahh....but if you go right into your interface via it's instrument input, chances are pretty good that's a built-in DI meant for instrument levels... ;) ...so it's the same thing.

For Bass...my favorite is a FET-type DI circuit (standalone box or as part of a preamp or interface)...it works like a charm!
One of my preams has a FET DI...and it's my go-to Bass recording SOP.

I have a 2 ch fast track pro, do you know if it has a built in D/I interface.

Nope...that only has Mic/Line level inputs.

if an interface has *instrument* level inputs...that's DI, same as using an external DI box.

I think that is does have instrument though.

I looked at another picture and couldn't really read the writing...and they only talked about Mic/Line., but yeah, that does have instrument inputs...you just need to set the button next to the input (Line/Instrument)..so yeah, that's a DI.

Of course, if you prefer to use an external DI....then just plug its output into the *Mic* input, since most DI box outputs are meant to go into a preamp input, not Line or Intrument input.
