so this is my bands second time around recording something. our first try was a fast, whatever take sounds better learning opportunity for me and now we're actually going to use this machine to make a serious recording. i'm not really sure if that's even possible, but from what the previous owner of the recorder has produced, things seem promising.
first off, i don't use it to mix, i've been using it to pretty much record each instrument, change everything to wave, and then mix on my computer. HOWEVER, recently we've been trying to record bass and it's happening to be incredibly difficult, more difficult than we expected.
the first thing we did was wheel my ampeg 8x10 cab into a smaller room of my cottage which has wood paneling everywhere. we then plugged in the trace elliot head and fender jazz bass to start shaping the sound we hoped for, (just giving specifics incase it'll help to get better answers) after that we used a condenser mic set up at the second up from the bottom and to the left speaker and put headphones on. it was too fuzzy sounding, every little sound in the room was picked up. so we changed to an akg vocal mic which we heard was "decent". the peak level had to be set really low or fuzziness was heard when ANYTHING was played. we tried our best with that and decided we weren't getting the full, bassy yet prominent tone we had hoped for.
so on to plan b. we plug straight into the recorder and try using the bass multi 1 plug-in and edit the compressor and equalizer settings to see what we can do. sounds better than when the cab was miced, but the peak still seems to need to be incredibly low. also, even when the peak is put all the way down, the faint bass that can be heard is still wrought with fuzzy sounding notes when strings are hit to hard.
i have no clue what to do, and i'm beginning to get fed up with all of this crap, but this is all we can work with for now and i KNOW something better can come out of this machine, i've heard it for myself. this is really really REALLY much more than i intended to write, but please, help a beginner out! what would you guys do in this situation? i've contaced the original owner and he takes a few days to reply so i was wondering what you people thought.
thank you,
chuck
