I am still figuring all this out. Anyway the other night I was recording the band and the Bass guitar was coming through the mix way too loud and distorted. I had the Gain on that channel all the way down (since using the insert I apparently have no signal control on the mixer, past the gain input). I was using an Insert I/O to run the signal from the mixer to the ADAT machines.

Here is my question,,,,, I was running the line out of the Hartke bass rig using the built in DI on the back of the head. There are no db pads on that head, or on the mixer I am using. I have since just mic'd the Bass amp rig for the control I need.

Are built-in DI's on bass rigs always so hot? And if so, is there a way to pad the signal so I can use the amps DI without having to mic the amp?

I am also looking into a Mackie 32/8 mixer to buy (if I can ever find one for sale at a reasonable price) Will having seperate direct outs on all the channels help with this problem?

Thanks

You may have to get a separate DI box for it. Are you sure the line out is a DI box? It may be for running to a PA, and not meant for recording at all. Your best bet is to get a DI box for it, and if it's feasable (noise not being a factor), mic the amp at the same time...

Thanks ROKKET,
All it says on the back of the Hartke Bass amp head where I plug the XLR cable in at is Direct Out, and it has a pre and post switch for it (which I have tried both). Thats it. It dosent specify anything about PA vs Recording output. I will try your suggestion.

Thanks again

Yeah, the XLR out on my amp is for PA. Most are, unless it states on the amp that it's a recording out, it's most likely too hot to do anything with. And even a recording out isn't all that great.

Good luck with it.
