I'm getting ready to purchase a bass guitar for recording on my MR-8. Is it okay to plug directly into it or should a direct box be used?

You can plug your bass directly into the MR-8. Just keep in mind that the pre amps in the MR-8 are not that good. If you have a DI box, use it. I use a Yamaha MG 10/2 as a pre amp.
