if I want to start the recording for say my guitar track during the 2nd verse over the piano track, how can I listen to the piano track but not start recording the guitar track from the beginning. I hope that makes sense. I just don't want to use up more space recording nothing until I start playing.

If the lines below were the soundwaves from the piano part (---) and the guitar part (===) this is what I would like:

Piano: ---------------------------------------------------------------
Guitar: ==========

thanks

I assume you are using cubase?

Create a new track for your guitar. Move the slider to the part of the song you want to start recording at. Click record and start playing.

I know I can do that but I want to hear the the piano track before the guitar. So I can listen to that track and then record the guitar part when it's supposed to come in

Well, normally you would just record from the start of the song, then start playing your guitar when you want to come in. From there, you can 'cut' off the front of the audio (the quiet bit).

Another option is to set the guitar up to record, go to the start of the track and press PLAY. Just before you want the guitar to come in, click RECORD and it will drop into recording mode on the guitar track.

I'm not infront of Cubase right now, and I only use Cubase SX3, but:

An easy way of doing that would be to use the left/right locators and highlight JUST the area you want to record in.

Then, on the transport window, in the record options, you'll want to select the option that allows you to automatically 'punch in' and 'punch out', so that it ONLY records during the highlighted locator section.

Then just scroll back as far as you want and hit play. When it reaches the area you selected with the locators, it'll automatically drop into record without you having to touch anything.

Have a look!
