I'm bored with fruity loops and would like to record the entire acoustic drumkit on independent tracks i.e bass, snare, cymbals, tomtoms & Highhats simuntaneously but only have 1 input on my laptop....How do i go about doing it?

There is really no way to do that with only one input. You could run separate mics into a mixer and then into your laptop but they will be mixed together and still only one track in the computer. (or two if it is stereo) If any single piece in the drum set didn't come out right, you would have to re-record the whole thing just to make that correction.

You really need front end gear that has multiple inputs to do it right. There are a few cheap interfaces out there that will do a fair job of it.

As usual, if you want to expand your capabilities, you must expand your equipment as well.

What Raw said is completely correct.
What you can do in the mean time of upgrading is record each segment of kit one at a time.
It is not as bad as all that.
Record the kick first or Kick / Snare if you have 2 tracks simultaneous capability (then record snare second), Then go back with a stereo spread of cymbals and or toms.

You'll end up with a pretty good sound not to mention some pretty good isolation of tracks.

Thanks , I kinda guessed thats it is impossible....Is digital recording the only way to records drums at home?

1. Place 1 mic above the kit, and play the song recording the entire kit on 1 track. This is your Guide Track.

2. Then mic the Kick drum. Go back and play JUST the Kick drum to the guide track. Record on to it's own track.

3. Next Mic the Snare drum, and play along to the guide track. Record the Snare on to it's own track.

Then you continue recording the rest of the drumkit in this manner.

You have just learned how Def Leppard made Pyromania with Mutt Lange.

This will give you the ultimate in isolation and control of each individual track, but it's kind of a pain in the ass to record in this manner.

One Stop Isolation?

Hello everyone...Im not new to sequencing, but i am new to midi...(real new)

just wanted to comment...from another angle about isolating drums.

why go through all that with so many niiice clean samples already available

kicks...hh, etc...

boredom?...

if your determined...i would get the mic hot as hell then go through each drum peice in one recording...then edit the wave file...and extract each drum peice.

can beef up the results with eq and compression and what not

but for boredom...try this..

get an empty 5 gallon plastic bucket..turn it upside down like the hustlers in subways do..and experiment with all the sounds you can get...

dont forget to put the mic under it...your in for a fat acoustic drum session
(no foolin)

strike it with different parts of your hands...lightly...boney...flesy...palmy
move inward and outward towards the rim you know...try the sides..
not to mention all the different objects you can strike it with..

cigarette lighter...egg wisk and so on...

hey you said you was bored..put some spare change on there now...and listen as it jingles a little...

have fun

lol
