The Way It Moves
I want to record a bass tone similar to that of Sevendust, a nice growly bass.

How is this accomplished?

Get a DI and also mic the cab/speaker.
Lowpass the DI and highpass the mic.

You can also do something similar with just a straight DI track.
Duplicate it and eq each track different.

Basically, you want one track of solid lows and another track of the "grind".
it's almost like having an extra guitar track down the center.

Thanks, I never thought about doing it that way. Should definitely help in the heaviness department.

Food for thought...

Track a bass DI

Hi-Pass the Bass DI and reamp it with the GTR amp using similar setting as gtrs but probably a lot less gain. Pay attention that this does not sound totally divorced from the DI tone. It should not sound like a separate instrument.

Then mix the two, Bass DI Low Passed and the Reamped Bass High Passed, varying the Filters.

Parallel compression can really make this work got you.

This new Bass mix can now mix very well with the gtrs and can become an extension of the gtrs.
