Recording 8 tracks with a Tascam M-308

The documentation notes that this mixer is better-suited to 4-track recording, but says that it is capable of pairing with an 8-track recorder.... but then skips explaining how exactly.

I have 5 drum mics connected to channels 1 thru 5 on the mixer. All 5 channels are on. They are assigned to pgm busses 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1, respectively (it's a 4-buss mixer).

The 8 pgm ins and 8 pgm outs are connected to a DA-88 and all 5 tracks are armed.

The odd channels are panned left and the even channels are panned right.

The pgm/buss faders are at unity.

When setting trim and fader levels for the mics I noticed that the mic on channel 1 is being sent to track 1 **and channel 5** of the recorder. Panning 1 to the right just turns them both down.

Channels/tracks 2, 3 and 4 work as expected (since channels 6, 7 and 8 aren't enabled. setting up channel 6 yields the same pairing issue as seen with 1 and 5, but its partner is track 2. Presumably the same thing would happen with 3/7 and 4/8).

When you look at the back at the pgm ins and outs, each pgm buss has its own pair of ins and its own pair of outs. 4 busses * 2 ins = 8 ins. Same for outs. They are paired: 1/5, 2/6, 3/7 and 4/8. The panning, I thought, was to redirect a channel to either the left or right side of each pair. But that's not what's happening.

Question 1: Since the manual doesn't cover this and I'm out of ideas, I was curious if anyone in here might know what I'm doing wrong.

Question 2: I think my fallback position is using the direct out and line in on the back of each channel strip. What are the downsides to connecting the recorder this way? Anyone tried this?

If you want 8 discreet signals going out, use the direct outs instead of the buss outs. Use the busses only if are combining signals to go to a given channel or pair of channels.

Right. The 8 PGM out jacks are really just two sets of output jacks for groups 1-4. So your two mics assigned to group 1 are going to go to tracks 1 and 5 the way you have it hooked up. Like he said above use the direct outs 1-8, or in combination with the PGM outs. Connect the 8 DA-88 output jacks to the 8 TAPE IN jacks.

I can't test until this evening likely, but when reading the manual last night it mentioned that Direct Out is "pre on/off switch". I'm assuming that means I won't be able to turn a channel on or off. I suppose that's one of the downsides of doing it this way. Any workaround for that?

It means the direct outs are active regardless of the switch position.

Yes they did it that way on purpose and generally that’s the desirable setup. The direct out is post-fader but pre ON switch…that allows you to, for instance, if you’re doing a multitrack recording of a live performance, mute channels to the house system without interrupting the recording.
