recorderman=hells yeah

yesterday was the first time I tried out the recorderman setup.. I also mic'd the kick, snare and toms (i know i didn't really HAVE to mic the toms but i wanted to get a huge drum sound) and i think i've gotten the best drum sound i've ever gotten.. I've used the xy setup and i've done just room mics before but the recorderman + mic the whole kit has proven to yeild great results for me!


anyone else have a micing set they swear by for the traps?

Nevermind found it. Two mic set up. I never liked xy set up. Never got a good sound. But I mic every drum and use overheads for cymbals and a little ambience. I also set up room mics.

If I am able to mic the toms, I definitely prefer a spaced pair like above, but if I can't mic toms, I'll use the other "method".

The best drum sounds I have had so far are with the recorderman set up. I think my kit records well when it's in the corner of my one room studio using recorderman.

Nevermind found it.

That's not really the recorder man setup. That's just a spaced pair. The recorder man method has the first OH directly above the snare and the other an equal distance from the snare and kick as the first mic.

I prefer the Glyn Johns variation with one OH above the snare and the other a foot over the floor toms pointing at the snare.

Yes. I was using the Recorderman for about 2 years and switched to the Glyn a few months ago. They're both good and similar, but I like the Glyn better.
