Well Im writing back to you guys with the info you have helped me with..Vox if you remember me from the post I had posted before about drum micing...This is just a live prformance to test the sound of the mics so you'll hear a faint guitar and singin in the back round because Im limited to space so We have to preform in one room...i do this to get the basic drum parts down then ill rerecord the guitars and all that good stuff.then redo the drums...so far the help here has been excellent..I have never recorded drums this good ever before....this is 11 mics on the drums set..I said i would send a file with the drums semi mixed so you guys can rip me up...hehe...well here it is...Tell me how im doing....:).....Id like to hear the pros and cons of it keeping in mind of how its tracked...I hope im gettin somewhere...Thx fellas for all the help

btw These 11 tracks are summed into 1 and 2 on the 8 buss of the mackie then through a Bellari rp 583 comp/lim then out the mains

Just let me make sure I understand your post.
You have recorded a kit with 11 mics summed them to 2 Tracks and compressed on the way out.
Did I get this correct ?.

I suggest you give me a full description of mic placment,
Mics used and description of the room you are recording in.

Explain to me how you use 11 mics ?!??.
All I heard was a little 5 sec beat in the middle of a song.
I'll be honest....I didn't like it.

Ok were playing in a 14x22 room...low ceilings.....These mics are recorded into a tascam Mx 2424 then mixed down into the the Buss of the mackie..into my sound card and made a quick Mp3.....And thanks for being honest....

would help if i told you the mics....3 senns 604e's 2 on the floortoms one on the snare 4 akg c 418 clip on jobs for the high toms....D112,s on the kick.....I was never able to get a good sound for the drums ever before but I made a desicon to upgrade and get some decent stuff...This is my first REAL studio...I was so used trying to get garbage equipment to sound good now i dont know what to do with the good stuff any help would be appeciated...Thx

A few things you may want to try.

The cymbals sound weak to me. The ride sounds choked. Did you have a mic on it? The toms sound good as far as i can tell. I'm asuming in the sample he's hitting two different floor (?) toms. Tuning wise i think they could be farther apart, the lower one should sound like thunder. The kick sounds good, but- the rattle of the snare kinda kills it. Gate it or better yet, edit out the rattle inbetween. THe snare sound isn't to my taste, but that's a whole other thing. With snares it's totally subjective and whatever works works with the song.

Tell us exactly the placement for all 11 mics + what mics thery were. This is intresting information to me.

Would be nice to get the mic placement. I don't understand that if you all played in one room, and had 11 mics on the kit, why don't we hear a load more backgound noise?
(just a stupid observation I suppose).

Guys, have a listen at this:
http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/alternative/uru/ and tell me what you think of the drumsound on that.

hmm.. to me it sounds liek you have the toms stuffed. i just think i can tell, because i really dong hear any tone.

Also, i know drummers love to have a giant kit, ive drummer since i was ten, but for recording, you can really get a much better sounds out of a standard 5 piece with your choice of cymbals. every tom miced + overheads, and an always tricky snare mic with hihat bleed can cause some crazy phase problems as well as really lop-sided sound.

not my cup of tea

D'addario:

Sorry, don't like it, especially the sound of the snare. The toms seem to be ok, though - not enough *boom*, however to fit my taste.
More info on placement would be really great (once again).

sjoko2:

Did you do that? Enormous room on the snare in the intro & choruses - didn't really like that, as I'm more into naturally sounding drums, but seems to be appropriate for the style of the song. Nice effect in the verses, however. How did you do that? (If it IS an effect, I only listened to the lo-fi version of "You Know", hi-fi didn't work)

David.

Well thx again everybody for the replies...I thought I was doing ok...prolly cause im not used to hearing good quality...And dont know much basics about anything as far as mic placement the 4 akgs c418 on the first 4 toms...they are 1 click down from verticle The 2 floor toms I have Sennheiser 604e's all the way at the top of the mounting bracket and pointing about 5 inches in from the edge The snare which is also a senn I at the top or the bracket and is pointing towards the middle On the bass drums which are closed head no hole the D112's are about 4 inches in from the side and about 2 inches from the face I had to do that because I was getting a way to hot signal from the mics and im not even using the preamps to boost in the board at all...same with the toms..I do agree the floor toms are lost and Im not getting a lot of boom...Then On the wall right in back af the drummer are 2 pzm radio shack versions facing out towards the set not on the ceiling (which is Pitched) maybe they should be there they are mosty my overheads and cymbal catchers.....After i posted to this site I found a really good article on here about eqing the drums which helped alot...im sorry guys im prolly just waisting your time and Im no good at this but Im trying....If you like i could send another clip of them In lower quality mp3 so you can hear more with the new eqing that Ive done....When Im placing the mics on the set what am I looking for in sound when I move them around...??...Maybe you guys could give me help on placement and what to listen for....Im trying to get a nice tight sound on the drums sorta like Old pantera vulgar drums...That type of sound is what im looking for...Thx guys alot
