I was wondering if anybody can give me any links to istes that sell slelves I can store my collection of 7000 records. :)

Co-sign...

I dont have 7000, more like 700.. but theyre all in crates and boxes under my bed right now, not easily accessible.. I've seen some pics on here and other boards of nice shelves, tables (ones that store wax underneath, and got turntables/mixer on top)... anyone make these themselves? I'll probably end up doing that myself, save some money plus I can build it to my own specifications. But if anyone know of anywhere to get some nice shelving.. please post

I've got about 5000. What kind of stuff do you collect?
As for the shelves...I always just build my own. If you buy 1x12 boards...they're the perfect size to make record shelves. And man it's a lot cheaper than anything you can buy.

yeah -

How do you all catagorize ( sp?) your collection ?

I just do mine alphabeticaly. It took about three years to do. I have them all in a catalog and on the shelves I put them in order by how many of an artist I have so albums that I only have one of go first...two albums of an artist goes second and so on. That helps to find things cause I have some letter catagories that are kind of large. I do have a few catagories I put seperate from the others. Greatest hits and compilations go in their own seperate section. Also comedy and classical have their own sections but the rest (country, rock, jazz) are all together alphabeticaly

Have any pics of those shelves??????

I was wondering if you have pictures of the shelves you made?

I catergorize my Records alphebetically and by Style of music. :)

Ya' know....I've been looking for an excuse to figure out how to use my wife's digital camera and put pics up here. Look for a picture sometime this week. If they look like something that would be useful for you...I'll draw out a diagram of where I put screws and such so they hold up. Records, of course, are heavy and you need a good solid structure so they'll hold up. I've used one of these for at least 20 years and have moved it from house to house.

Hey thats would be great

Thanks alot. That would be very helpful, Lt. BOB

Building Shelves!!!

I agree. MUCH BETTER than anything you can buy. Yes, lt. Bob is correct, records are HEAVY and shelving will need adequate support, will rip screws right outta dry wall if you're not careful.

Best bet for adequate support. Go to Home Depot and pick up a 'stud finder'. Electronic is best, can get a good one for $21 bucks. Go to a corner of the wall you want to place your shelves on and glide stud finder in a 2 ft. section from left to right until it beeps. Mark the wall, then measure 16 in". from first stud to center of wall, check with stud finder and you should be dead on another stud. Continue finding stud location for the desired length of your shelving. With your studs found, you can then screw 'heavy duty' shelving brackets in, using a level and or 'snap line' to ensure even height. The 1x12" are perfect although you may have to do a bit of research to find the appropriate size brackets. With all said and done, you should have nice shelves, fastened securely and a lot of money left in your pocket!!!

Note: for additional support you can 'notch' 2x4's and strategically place them on front ends and center of your shelf wall. Tools needed: Hand Held Skill Saw, $30-$50 at Home Depot, patience and a tape measure.

Good Luck.

Sounds like a great collection!!!
