Someone on IRC (#hamtech on StarChat) told me that I could record my guitar directly to my Mac, through the Audiophile 2496 card, but that I might not like the sound that results. Right now, since I'm unable to just mike one of my amps - my setup's in a common area, right now :( - I need to be able to record guitar and bass directly into the Mac...as in from the output on the amp. What can I put between the amp and the audio card that'll allow me to acheive the best sound possible. I figure I'll definately need something between the bass and the Mac, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

There are several amp modelers on the market nowadays which let you record good guitar sounds without having to mike an amp. Like the Line6 POD, Johnson J-station, Behringer V-amp, Digitech Genesis.. Search for these names on this board (see the search button on the upper row of this page) and you'll find a lot of posts with info and reviews from actual users.
You wouldn't necessarily need an amp modeler to record bass though. Many bass tracks are recorded direct in, using just a DI + preamp.

Thanks a bunch! The hardware you've mentioned is avilable, several places, in Indianapolis, so I should be able to try before I buy. I think I tried a Bass POD, a few months ago...totally floored me, with the range of effects available. Then, I looked at the price, and ended up with a tad bit of sticker shock...is worth saving up for, however. :)
