Hello All,

Ok I have finally saved enough money to get Adobe Photoshop 6 and Illustrator 9. I am currently struggling my way through learning how to use these monsters. It is already clear that I will have to get a “Dummies” book since the manual(s) are written for people that are already experienced with high end graphic programs. Anyway, I am usign them as a means to generate CD covers and graphics for bands that are on my VERY SMALL record label that is yet to release it’s first pressing of anything. However, I am trying to learn a mountain of computer programs in roder to make it all look as professional as possible for as little money as possible. At the moment I am wearing MANY hats… from graphics designer, to PR official, to A&R, to recording engineer/producer. And now I have been put in charge of the desktop publishing department. We are trying to get together a monthly or at least quarterly news letter / Magazine to send to those people on our mailing list.

Now I have already “learned” a lot about graphics design and I feel that I can at the moment squeeze together some really good stuff that fits right into our niche market. However, I am falling short on the Desktop Publishing aspects. As I have probably drilled into everyones head already, I am in Europe in Germany, and I am am not really perfect with my german and I have no real person to ask about desktop publishing programs. So, I wanted to ask you guys a few questions…

· Which is the absolutely BEST desktop publishing software program on the market at the moment, regardless of price, and regardless of how complicated it is to learn? (please include estimated price range in the US).

· Ok.. that said, which is the BEST program that will not bankrupt me, and I can learn in this century? (keep in mind that I want PRO looking quality).

· Does anyone know of any books that are on the market for Adobe Photoshop 6 and Illustrator 9 that will help me SPECIFICALLY with CD graphics, posters, and Magazine print worthy quality graphics?

· ***MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION*** Does anyone know of any other websites other than homerec.com that handles Desktop Publishing of ANYTHING (not just music related) and graphics? I am looking for as many Forum (BBS Bullitin Board News Groups) to subscribe to. I am almost completely alone here but have a massive technological task.

· ***2nd MOST IMPORTANT*** Does anyone know of any other MUSIC related websites that have a BBS (or doesn’t) that deal specifically with the music BUSINESS? I have already been subscribing to www.velvetrope.com, www.pollstar.com, www.cmj.com, and about 12 dozen record companies websites… But I have yet to find a really good BBS for independent record compaines that aren’t all blown up with egos and so self-important that you are made to feel like an idiot if you ask a simple question about International Distribution.

Thanks a Million Time Over,
Mike
