Can't help much with the 1680 part, and my 840 is not an EX. However, to record a CD to Zip on my machine, I just hook up a CD player to the RCA inputs on 3&4. Use EZ Routing to select "Recoding" mode, follow the menu 'til near the end and when it prompts "Use 3/4 as external inputs?" just push the yes/enter button. Then I'm ready to track the CD to the 840. I usually put the stereo track on 1 & 2 for more control, but if you're going to add reverb or something, I'd use one of the stereo pairs. To transfer to 1680 shouldn't be too difficult. Maybe some of you 1680 guys can pick it up from here...
