I want to record a live gig in multi-track. I have a fast laptop with USB 2.0 and have had success with the emagic 6|2 interface -- that's 6 tracks. But I really need 8 (well, I really want 12, but...). I was thinking of getting the Edirol UA-1000 USB interface unit ($640), but then I thought that I could use TWO M-Audio Quattros ($120 each used on eBay).

Question: Using Cakewalk and the M-Audio ASIO drivers, can I support two interface units at the same time???

How much you looking to spend on it? I just found my new setup in the new Onyx line from mackie you should check it out The 1220 with optional firewire interface turns the unit into a DAW workstation with the ability to do 16 (it think) simultaneous tracks. If your laptop doesn't have firewire you can get pcmia cards for type I and type II cardslots. The whole she-bang runs in the area of about $800.00

Check out the Fostex VF160. It can do simultaneous 8-track recording, and if you have extra analog gear I believe you can rig it to even get full 16-track simultaneous recording. You can probably find one on eBay, with a 20/40g hd AND a cdr drive for in the neighborhood of around $700-800.

Thanks for the comments - very good. I'l check on these units. I think $800 is my limit, but you know how those things can creep up, eh?

Still welcome any other suggestions...
