Spread the Daf!
I just got 4 JBL D110F 10" guitar speakers which need reconing. Now, these are seriously cool speakers and JBL doesn't even make instrument speakers anymore so I'm hot to put them in my 1970 Ampeg VT-40.

I called JBL to see what it'd cost to recone them .................

$175 EACH!!!!!!!
Good lord ......... $700 to recone 4 speakers.

It cost 250 a piece to do my 70's studio monitors. You are getting off light. I will tell you it is well worth it though. There is nothing like wattage through a good set of JBLs.

I have a JBL D-130 15" guitar speaker that needs reconing as well , have held on to it over the years .

You might be able to find private vendors that do reconing. We used to do that here in the Sacramento area.

I've got some JBL studio monitors from the 1980s that need reconing and I am affraid to let them go but also don't want to pay that kind of $$ to recone them. They are 4410s.

I wouldn't even consider letting your local tech's or reconing faclity recone your JBL's ... Why? The quality will just not be there!... I've been through this several times with PA (JBL) systems trying to save a buck here or there...and have always been super disappointed...

My advice... grit your teeth... pay JBL what they want... because you will get the quality you expect...

Lt. Bob, contact Weber (http://www.webervst.com/), he does the best job for this kind of speakers and I'm sure he's way cheaper (BWT he makes great speakers too, the closest to the old ones I think)

Ted Weber is certainly worth a try if he has the kits for the D130F and the D110F.

My first choice would be Orange County Speaker Repair in California. Keep in mind that both these speakers are well over 40 years old, and were never expected to last this long (especially in the hands of musicians).

There are many good repair places in the country, but OCSR would be my first choice. (You can take my personal recommendation for whatever that's worth.)

Hey Harvey ....... I've been kinda looking for you.
Do you have any thoughts on how good the D110Fs are for guitar work ?........ primarily blues and soul type music in an Ampeg VT 40.

you're welcome Lt. Bob :)

yes Harvey OCSR looks good too

yet Ted Weber would be my first choice when it comes to Guitar speakers, he makes is own kits for each Vintage original guitar speaker and they sound as close to the originals as you could do to me :)
(he's also very kind and responds to all your questions in details)

Well, I designed the D110F to be somewhat close to the JBL D123, which is my favorite blues speaker, although it won't handle the power like the D120F will. Of all the F series speakers, the D110F is my favorite, but as I said, the D123 is my all time favorite JBL speaker for guitar. Four D110F's should kick some serious ass for blues

Ted is a great guy, and we've had a long talk about him coming out with my old F series. Is he actually supplying recone kits with the flat wound aluminum voice coils? I didn't think he was able to do that yet.

Harvey in fact I don't know about this kit :)
I haven't asked him about his JBL kits, I mainly know his work for old Pre Rola Greenbacks (especially G12H).

BTW thanks for the input on the D123, I think I should try to find some ;)
Also have you worked for JBL ? wow :)

Those use standard round-wound voice coil wire, as I recall.

Yes, I worked there from the mid 50's to late 60's. There's a JBL historical site at:

http://www.audioheritage.org/html/history/jbl-pro/1960s.htm

Scroll down to the paragraph that's next to the picture of the D140F. It mentions me.

ORANGE COUNTY SPEAKER REPAIR! They will make them BETTER than new! I know....... I have a D120F in my Deluxe that they did in 1980! and it STILL sounds like NEW! :)

Thank you for the confirming support on OCSR. I would've thought that my recommendation alone would have been more than enough for the people here, but apparently not. Glad you agree with me, and I'm happy that you still like the D120F after all these years.

Thanks for the review on OCSR Harvey Gerst and Revmuddy. If I have one day JBLs that need reconing I'll look for their job :)

I'm happy to have found this forum with great persons like you Harvey :)
