Reconfiguring 98se for multitrack recording

I need help with configuring windows 98se and multitrack recording. Windows is pausing, hesitating during the recording process. What do I need to shut off in 98SE to stop it from interfering with the recording process. I did not have this problem before using Windows 95. I am using 3 Dman 2044's with Saw32, Cool Edit 2000, and Cakewalk 9.0. Any guidance on how to eliminate this problem would be greatly appreciated. It seems to really become a problem after 6 to 8 tracks of audio are laid or inserted. Never had this problem with Windows 95, I sometimes had 22 to 30 tracks playing without any problem. Now with 98SE it seems, as I stated earlier, to be pain after just 6 to 8 tracks of recording. Again any insights on how to correct this problem greatly appreciated.
