I know this isn't exactly answering the question, but: what do you have now? I mean in your mixer or whatever equipment you already have.

... I know im not the tread starter but i am interested in the answer. I have a d8b, ... and have always wondered how those pre's stack to to many of the outboard pres you can buy. I've had limited experiece with them (just the ones at a studio i intered at)

any opinions are helpful
Thanks

I currently use the micpres on my Yamaha 1604 mixer, which has a nice fat and warm tone.

For a few more pezzutos, you can hook into a Grace Design 101 mic pre -- very good for the price from all that I've read. You can check out Grace Design and their products on the net.

Martinsound, as well as many others, make higher and higher priced mic pres. But, without hearing them, I can't comment.

I'm sure the Grace Design 101 would blow away my ART dual channel mic pre. The pres on my 2816 are pretty good; but for a vocal up front, some mic pre might be better than those that come with the boxes.
