I'm thinking of getting a system to record just a solo instrument. I will go to a pro studio that uses ProTools or Alesis HD24's and record the backing tracks. Then, I want to take that mix and dump it into a very high quality computer recording program and record sax at my leisure...then take that back to the studio and have them mix it. I have a PC with a 3.4G processor with 1G Ram and 160G internal hard drive and several external hd's.

I've decided on the AKG C12VR as my mic, but what would y'all recommend for the following:

*mic pre/computer interface
*recording software
*sound card
*interface needed to import/export to/from ProTools or HD24.
*Anything else!

Thanks.

Since you are asking this question, I will assume that you havnt done much recording in the past. You say you are going to a professional studio to recored everything except one instrument. Why would you spend the studio fees for everything but one track then spend 10 times that much for the equipment to record one track at less than studio quality? Its like taking a Diamond cluster and putting a GIANT cubic zirconia right in the middle of it.

anyway....as far as your question...it depends on your budget.
A widely used mic pre is the DMP3. There or tons of advocates of that on here...me being one of them...its just under $200.

computer interface...how many channels do you want? I know just one for now but think about expandablity. you may want more in the future...again, a commonly used card is the delta 44 (about $150 for 4 ins and outs)...iv never used it so i cant comment. also...this will cover the SOUNDCARD question.

I like Cool Edit/Adobe Audition. You can get tons of suggestions just by searching the forum.

just burn the tracks to CD and slap'm on your computer harddrive.

hope this helps some...

I've done tons of recording for myself and session work for others. I would like to have the luxury of recording my own projects on my schedule (when I'm "on", or when I want to tweak a section after chewing on it a while), that's all - the expense is not the big issue. Sometimes booking studio time is not the easiest thing to do with my schedule. I want a very good mic pre - I'm thinking in the $1-1.5K range.

Thanks

oh!! nothing left for me to say i guess...lol...

Since you only need two inputs, you could go with a ProTools LE setup using a M-Box.

You could get the sysytem for about $1,000 USD (which will leave you with some room to get some audio monitors).

Of course, you won't have a fully compatible home ProTools setup like the one in the studio. You will at least become acclimated with the program that your engineer is using.

I think that the studio can load your LE project into their HD system. But you cannot load their HD project into your LE system.

You must make sure that they export the files in WAV. or OMF.

Here is a link to the ProTools (Digidesign) site.

Thanks!

I think that the ProTools will load into the Alesis as well. I had thought about a small studio-in-a-box like the Akai DPS or Korg, but they have limited editing capabilities....SOOOO....I think that I'll go the computer route. The only thing that I'll be recording is sax...well, maybe some percussion ;) . I just want to be able to get a really clean track to take back to the studio.
