I am looking for recommendations for a good vocal mic under $400. Thank you all in advance.

Studio Projects C1 – around $225 street price. http://www.studioprojectsusa.com

I've worked w/ 6 vocalists on this mic and everyone of them sounds great. Best LDC under $1000, IMO. [ ...in many other people's opinion as well. ] It really does sound like a $2000 mic.

Ill say Marshall MXLv67....Studio Projects from what I heard is very similar.....AT4033 is a bit more $$$ but is good also....of course, mic choice is a personal thing as what sounds better differs from voice to voice and live auditioning is the optimal way of deciding.....

Also, make sure you have a good pre-amp and good mic cord to complete the vocal chain....

My recommendation is for the Studio Projects C1 too.
I picked mine up for about $200 + tax. It only cost a bit more than the
Marshall MXL V67, and it probably offers more value as the owner
of Studio Projects frequents this bbs and is serious about customer
service. I'm confident that in the event it needs repair or replacement
help will be there down the road. In addition, my understanding is that
the C1 puts out a (somewhat) hotter signal output than the V67,
and the C1 has a (slightly) better signal to noise ratio.

SP C1

Get the C1, you won't be sorry, in fact, you'll be very happy.

I bought mine for $209.00 shipped at Zotzdigital.com
I just called them and they said it's $230 shipped. I guess you got them during a generous moment. They also said PMI is pressuring them and others not to "low ball". How is that different from price fixing?

finally!

muzicstore.com e-mailed me to say they sell the C1 for $219.00
I hope I don't get them in trouble for posting that info here. My god, 10 whole dollars cheaper than the (wink wink nudge nudge) reasonable price everyone else accidently agreed on. I see a call from PMI in their future. Anyone with more info, prices, etc., please post here.

CORRECTION:
This just in to the news room, I e-mailed to ask if that price included shipping, and they said:
"it is $229.00 with insured shipping"

Hm

Price Fixing?

Found this on the net:
price fixing
Establishing the price of a product or service, rather than allowing it to be determined naturally through free market forces. Often illegal.

If the shoe fits . . .

[Ok, I promise to stop posting for a while, I just got a little interested for a while there.]

Price fixing sucks

But even at $229, the C1 is the way to go. But I'd make sure it is one of those that is $229 shipped....

Price fixing is illegal. Our MAP price is $229.99, which is not illegal. Of course, we could charge $599.99 and let the dealers discount like crazy, but that is just a retail game to make it look like you all are getting a deal.

I would rather not inflate our retail price, but rather try to encourage dealers to make a little money on the line, but not a ton like some others. Your getting great quality at a good price.

I am a straight shooter guys, the mic is well worth $229.00. No one gets rich off the C1. Truth is, the C1 is my loss leader. I would much rather sell the C3 and T3, as they are better mics, and I do make a bit more money on them.

Hey, what other manufacture gives you all this information? Name me one on this web. Hell, I am already an outcast in the manufacturers circle as a result of what I am doing...they don't like it at all.

You can spend a lot more dollars on a mic and not get as good of a sound, you have all read the reviews or own one yourself so you know what I am talking about. So with all due respect, don't gripe about the price...it is really a very fair price. peace guys :D

Sorry if my post about getting my C1 for "about $200 + tax" got us a
little fixated over price. Jim's Music has had to special order rather
esoteric items for me in the past, and through no fault of their own I
had to wait for a couple things longer than expected. As a result,
they gave me a special price since I never complained about waiting.
Their service, by the way, has always been the best. It's amusing that sometimes (including

It's kind of amusing when we (including myself) are caught up in small differences in price, when the k
price comparisons rather than focusing on long term value instead.
I stopped spending as much time doing price comparisons as I make
more money working my business instead of worrying about 10 or
20 bucks. When I was single and on a salary, I blew more money
on eating out, dating, etc. in a day or two than this too.

P.S. eichler, whichever place you select to buy a C1, the good news
is than you'll getting back more "change" than you expected!

Oops, sometimes when I edit on my imac computer, it gets a little
jumbled up, as you can see....

What is a MAP price? Do you deny that PMI put pressure on authorized dealers not to "low ball"? If this is true, do you consider it legal? In what sense is this mic a loss leader, and how can that make any sense from a wholesaler's point of view. Milk is a loss leader. The grocery store will sell milk near cost to get you into their store. How would discounting a mic do you any good? I'm not in your store. You don't have a store. What is the margin on the C1 compared to the other mics you sell.

"Hey, what other manufacture gives you all this information?"

You gave information no one asked for. Are you willing to back it up with evidence? Are you willing to answer my questions about alleged pressure on dealers?

Well, I resisted for as long as I could, but finally broke down and ordered my C1 this morning....I had an NT1 but sold it (a fairly good mic but a little too harsh)... I got my C1 for $199 so I'm happy :D

zoe,

I got it from Music Center Inc. Here's the URL:

http://www.musiccenterinc.com/

Their posted price is $229...I talked to Jet Townsend and he sold it to me for $199 + $7.55 shipping = $206.55. Phone number is 888-697-9393 Ext 222.
