I'm looking for a combo...1x12 or 2x12. Has to be all-tube. Has to have a great dirty channel...something that can go from slightly dirty to metal. Also has to have a great clean channel...very bell like and chimey.

I play on a Gibson Les Paul most of the time and also a PRS Custom 22 when I'm not playing the LP.

Oh yeah, $700 or less.

Start suggesting.

Peavey Classic 50.

It does everything, with fantastic cleans.

I've compared it directly to a Fender Deville and I liked the cleans on the Classic a lot more, and the OD on the Fender just sounded like ass next to it. The overdrive on the Classic is rediculously versatile, and no matter what you do to the shared eq, the cleans will still sound great.

I was in the same boat about a year ago--I wanted an all tube combo that could do anything. And I wasn't rich. I read, researched, read some more, and then started playing everything I could find.

I ended up buying a B-52 AT212 (100 watts, 2x12"). To a lot of folks around here I imagine that's near blasphemy given the propensities towards Fenders, Mesas, Peaveys, etc. I love Mesa Boogies, but this time around, it was out of my budget. Fenders--still want one for the "Fender" clean to blues break up.

But for one all tube amp that could do everything well and some things amazingly well--I'm still thrilled with my B-52.

Im curious why you would limit yourself to a $700 amp when your playing $2000+ guitars?
I also play all gibsons and I play them through a Marshall JCM900 for lighter classic rock and through a Mesa Dual Rectifier for heavier stuff.
The peavey Classic 50 isnt going to do much for metal without a pedal in front of it, but then that kinda defeats the purpose of having a tube amp anyway.
The newer Marshall jcm2000 series really suck tone wise, they almost have a solid state fizz to them.
I have tried all the name brands before buying and money was not one of my purchasing factors, aand Mesa came out the clear winner all around.
A person with the guitars that you have should have an amp worthy of them.

By the way, this is only a personal opinion, so dont take it for any more then that.
Rock ON!

Spot on.

To get the real kind of metal sound most metal heads are after, you need pedals. And unless you buy all-tube pedals (big bucks!) then why would you want to drive all that into a tube amp? I dont play metal, but my impression is to get the kind of metal sound you may be after, you're gonna have to spend a lot more than $700 bucks....

Might not be the most budget friendly, but your PRS plus anything made by Orange equals the best tone ever!

Because it's an amp I can keep at home. I have a Mesa Dual Recto setup at my band's practice space.

I second the B52, or the Peavey Valve King. The Line 6 Spidervalve is ultimately the most versatile though in my experience the 30 watt combo is the only thing worth looking at, and that's only if you want to run it hard and loud enough to get enough power tube breakup to defeat the fact that you're using a digital preamp.

That B52 AT series is a bargain and might be a fit for you. It's plenty suitable for metal and the clean channel is VERY clean and very loud. It's worth a look.

Then again, as some very wise person said, anything orange is good.

I say the peavy valveking with a nice dist pedal in front of it. The b52 is also a great amp. If you want to go overbudget i highly recommend a carvin v3.

you might want to check out the krank rev jr. 1/2 stack for $700

it's not really a combo, but a 20W with a single 1x12 cab...i've heard clips of the thing getting not only great metal tone, but absolutely AWESOME overdriven blues tones as well

even the tiny terror...heard a lot of demos of people using the amp w/o pedals getting some pretty heavy gain. I really want one now haha.

If you already own and play a Dual Rec, you will be sadly disappointed in any of the amps mentioned here I think. The peavey Valve King sounds like complete ass when beside a good amp.( yes, I have played it.)
I have very limited experience with Orange amps, so I cant really comment on them. But I am guessing the are very Marshallesque, in that they are british amps. I have also played the B-52 stacks, and was duely disappointed with that too.
Good luck in your search.

check the Traynor YCV40WR (or YCV40)! i got the YCV80 and it's a very versatile amp. great sounding cleans, can do anything from classic rock to punk to metal on the dirty channel. i wish i woulda bought the 40 instead of the 80 but i got a good deal i guess...but yeah i think its worth a look. maybe even check the YCV20. every time people talk about amps i like to bring up the Traynor which is a great piece of gear that's often overlooked.

I'd sell one of them guitars and go buy an awesome amp.

Orange Rocker 30!!

Have to look for a used one, but it's EXACTLY what you're looking for...nice cleans, killer distortion.
