Jesus Loves me.
in the $200.00 to $250.00 dollar range.....any comments ( even smartass one's) would be greatly appreciated.

I like my MXL 603s. You could get a pair of the MXL 604, with changeable caps for around that price.

thanks for the recommendation....so are sdc's usually better as overheads than ldc's?

Kinda hard to say and it kind of depends on the situation. I use a pair of SM81 SDC's for live shows and a pair of M-Audio Solaris LDC's for recording. A lot depends on the kit, the room, the playing style, the sound you're going for, etc.

Musician's Friend is running a pair of AKG C430's for $200...don't know much about them though I suspect they're noisy...may work live. I'm using a pair of Audio-Technica AT3035's, which are dead silent and really sensitive. Unless you want to hear through your monitors, the bouncers beating up drunks in the parking lot...don't use these live. I paid $250 for the pair...eBay of course. Dig hard enough and you may find more.

thanks guys. these will be strictly for recording.....the type of stuff I'll be recording will range from alternative to harder rock.

the rooms I'll be recording in, will be my spare bedroom (10X12) and my living room (12X30)

i went to guitar center today and the guy in the pro audio section was actually knowledgable and helpful, it was shocking. anyway, they're selling oktava mc012s (probably counterfeit, big deal!) for $125 each WITH all the capsules! i wish i had the money to pick up a pair right then and there. he even offered to let me test as many as i needed to so i could get a good match for a pair.

Hey dude be careful with that whole "he offered to let me test them" cuz anytime I buy a mic at GC, they always tell me that there is absolutely in NOW WAY ANY KIND OF RETURN on them. I dunno what it is, I thought maybe it would just be vocal mics because you know, people slobber all over them. (Not like they couldn't just sterylize them anyway) But they made sure they told me repeatedly before I walked out the door with the last drum mics I bought. So, just a heads up. Make sure you know whats going on so you don't get screwed, and, good luck!

p.s. I'm not trying to knock GC, if anyone gets that impression....

he offered to let me go into the room with all the monitors and close the door and test them out, not take a bunch of them home with me

funny thing though.. they were selling a used shure ksm27

Well that might be because they were actually selling it as a used mic. If you were to buy a brand new ksm27 and have people screaming all over it and then brought it back, they definitely could no longer sell it as a new mic, which is a big proffit loss for them.
