Anyone want to recommend a good-sounding soft synth that does GM sequences right out of the box (i.e., comes with a GM bank of sounds/samples) . . .or an add-on for Kontact2 player?

Does anyone have experience with the Forte DXi synth (how does it sound)?

Thanks,
Paj

Hi,

GM (assuming General Midi) is cool! Especially, if played back on stretched cassette tape, if you know what I mean :D. On the software side the only one that comes to mind is Apple's DLSMusicDevice. :D That's GM right? At least the piano is sounding like a decent, trustworthy "stereo piano" :D. I think winamp has a GM module also.

Best regards,
PK

I would recommend to take a look on Native Instrument's "Bandstand", Hypersonic 2 (not distributed anymore) oder Edirol several "Canvas" programs.

I always open/edit GM files with the Cubase 4 or 5 built-in HalionOne VSTi which has a good general purpose sound as every GM module. But you can't purchase this as a stand-alone program.

Plus one on Bandstand.

You can never go too far wrong with Native Instruments - they do everything well. And Bandstand is only $99.

FREE solution:

Cakewalk's free SFZ soundfont player (or one of the other free soundfont vsti's - go search over at www.kvraudio.com). SFZ is quite a sophisticated sampler player.

And a good high-quality free General Midi soundfont (I like Unison, Cadenza or Fluid) from one of the soundfont sites like hammersound.net
