Hi all,
I have a decent set up but have used MIDI stuff for recording so much I have forgotten how to record audio well. I recently tried miking up a friend for gtr and vox using my gear (see sig). I used five mikes two SM57's for the gtr, a Superlux R102 ghoing through my mono TLA 5051 for the vocals and tow ambient mics front and rear.

Trouble was that cos my sound card only has tow XLR inputs I had to turn up the gain so much I got buried in hiss (on the non XLR inputs)

Seems I need a decent preamp.
Now I know it does not have to be valve, and I know some valve things are really gimmiky (e.g. with little lights showing them off in a window liek an Amsterdam brothel)

Above all I want something that works, is smooth and has as many inputs as I can get - eight would be good, but I would settle for less if ti was the right gear.

What are you using and happy with? What do you drool to get?

Retro gear (even non Neve) is fine as I will be keeping an eye on E bay.

Its not something I keep up with so I just dont know those model numbers, plenty to choose from I am sure

thanks for your troubles

You need ANY preamp. The rca ins on the 1010lt are all line level, so to connect a mic, as you found, you need a preamp. I have two 1010lts in my setup. With one, I have a Soundcraft M8 mixer. Each channel has direct outs and those are connected to the soundcard. My other 1010lt is fed from a Presonus D8. If you just needed a couple extra channels, check out a DMP3.
