this is the 1st song i've recorded using my vintage Ibanez Artist i just purchased.

the story behind the song, is that back in 1979, i bought a brand new ibanez artist, and gigged with it for about 5 years, before i sold it to purchase my carvin. i had always regretted letting that guitar go, and just a few weeks ago, i found a 1977 ibanez artist, almost just like my original one, and i just had to nab it.

so, the song is telling the story in 3 parts...
1st part, the search for the guitar
2nd part, the recollection of the sound and feel of the original guitar
3rd part, celebration of the new found guitar.
hehehe
simple.

all the guitar parts are the ibanez artist thru a '81 mesa boogie mark2b head, avatar closed back cab with a Heritage Celestion g12-h55.

all guitar parts are double miced, using a ADK Hamburg as a 'room mic' on one side, and the Palmer Junction direct on the other side, typical for all 3 guitar parts.
the mic signal is fed thru an analog DBX compressor and tube mic preamp before hitting the convertor.

bass was double tracked, using the Sansamp Bass DI as a splitter- one track straight off the Sansamp, and the other split to my mesa boogie (tweaked for the bass)- mic was fed thru an analog DBX compressor and tube mic preamp before hitting the convertor., and the 2 tracks were blended to one bass buss, with compression and limiting on it.

some thoughts, on miced guitars and direct guitars via the Palmer Junction:

you know, a guitar played thru a real amp, in my opinion, will ALWAYS sound better than a sim.
even with a crappy mic and setup, you get a certain 'translation' that the sims don't seem to have.

even with my direct line in recordings i do with the Palmer Junction, i still have to apply some 'tricks' to get it sit just right.

i just like the palmer, because of the ease or working with it, and the clarity of it.

on this song, i've actually blended the palmer tracks with the live mic tracks.
if you listen in the headphones, i have active panning and level automation happening throughout the entire song....
makes the guitars sounds like their oozing around the sound stage.
what you're hearing, is the live mic side, being louder than the palmer for a while, then the palmer comes in louder, as the mic backs off.....
and it sways from left to right!
LOL

it's my little mind-fuk experiment

Sounds good. It kind of reminds me of King Crimson meets jazz club. I think the drum beat is kind of annoying. Addictive drums? Maybe a straight 4/4 beat with a few ghost notes. The guitar tones are great. Same with the bass. I think the drums can come up a little more too. Awesome job.

Very nice:cool:

Damn fine guitar playing great tone as well:cool:

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!! This place never ceaces to amaze me!!!! You are Freekin great man!!!! GREAT PLAYING AND TONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with squibble94...I think drums could come up a litle...but the sound of them dont bother me....did I tell you , you were great?!!?!?!

squibble94
appreciate the listening.
crimson, yea, i listened to crimson a LONG time ago.
always thought they were pretty original.
annoying drums?
oh well, can't please all drum-folk.
these are toontracks ez drummer.
i just got superior, and loaded it this weekend, used a different kit, tweaked the programming quite a bit, it's got a different flavor now, better i think.

nakarita
thanks man, pleased you like it.

rockonin
thank you. i DO work on my bass playing, it's a whole different vibe, than playing guitar.
i've done enough gigs as a bass player, to be able to switch hats pretty easily.
i like doing those parts as much as the guitars....]

Klutzee
thanks, appreciate the kind words.
the new mix, will have slightly louder drums.
thanks for the help....

Dude, you know I always got the love for yer stuff right? But, I got a few nits this time :D
The performances were amazing, no doubt, as usual - u rok! Hearing you play always makes me feel like a pimple-faced beginner at the local music store with a Squier waiting for lessons. The drum sound, uh, not so good :spank:
And, the usual Gonzo tone...not there!! I'm not big on that rotating-flappy-phramis-modulating-twistomatic-gizzmo-tone at the beginning...sorry :o
I'm not worthy!!!!!

:D

I could do the drums for ya lol! Great as always Gonzo, you need to stop buying guitars, soon you'll not have room to put em!

Cool little jazz funk type thing goin.

Really nice song! I love this type of fusion music! Loved every bit of it!!.. Now, what I would have done is to compress the kick and the snare a little bit more to make them more "snappy".. Maybe the snare need to be a little bit dryer for that matter also... In my opinion that works very well for fusion music!

mamximusbs
hehe, thanks for the lead in there...
you know, i grabbed this drum sound, cuz to me, it just sounded right.
i know folks are always going to prefer a certain sound...
but i like experimenting.
i don't know if i'll ever settle on just one drum kit...
the guitar tone?
well, i WANTED it to be different!
LOL
it's just a univibe effect...... without all the grunge, ala trower or hendrix....
but i promise, it's still me under the rotating-flappy-phramis-modulating-twistomatic-gizzmo-tone (maximus-catchphrase patent pending)
heh

ninja
i bet you COULD do the drums for me!
LOL
well, i'm not going to go with the john bonham drum kit on this one, just not gonna do it.
heheh
thanks for listening....

keem85
i guess it IS a little fusiony, eh?
i didn't really think of it that way, cuz it's pretty much a straight drum pattern, and you can't dance to fusion.
hehehe
i've gotten a new drum program since i did this one....
superior drummer...
and i've since replaced this kit with one of the new ones.
and basically done what you suggested.
i've brought up the treble bite on the top snare mic, and brought up the 'snare' side mic, to really get it rattling.
much more attack, much more snap.
i made the kick deeper, as well, which helps the snare stand out more.
plus, i edited the midi data, to mix up the snare more, so it's not so strident with it's hits.
you know, i love the Brand X Masques album, and that has, without a doubt, the driest drum mix i've ever heard.
i might experiment with that kind of treatment as well...
it'd be a fun experiment.
thanks for listening!
