I need to add some midrange and thickness to thinner male vocals. Is there a mic that will do this in the < 300 range?

I have a used Groove Tubes GT57 in great condition for $300

CAD M9 would be a really solid choice for that, IMHO. Either that or any number of ribbon mics.

I had sort of gotten the impression from various comments over the years that the 219 required significant modifications to actually sound good. I've never used one, though, so that's just me acting as an aggregator here....

Not sure about the 319. From what I've seen of Oktava mics, I'd expect a lack of high end detail in an unmodded mic---mainly taming the sibilance. If your singer is sibilant, that's a good thing. Otherwise, I'd expect a reduction in intelligibility.

I know there's a fine line between warm and dull, so those could easily be a good choice for some singers, but my gut says more often than not you'd be better off finding a modded 319 if you go that route, and even used, that will likely put you over $300.

I think the original poster should go to a music store and try some mics if at all possible. :)

Shure SM7 (dynamic) or Kel HM-2u (condenser)...broadcast type mics that give an "in your face" thickness and presence...;)
