ok. my studio building is on hold until next spring, but it gives me more time to think, which lead to questions.

my chief concern with the basement studio that I will be building is noise coming from the family room upstairs. i have a 3 year old and a 1 year old, so i am anticipating lots of noise in the near future.

am i going to significantly compromise noise reduction (keeping upstairs noise out) if i use recessed lighting since I'll have to cut holes in the drywall?

I'd say avoid putting any holes through the drywall, especially the ceiling. If you must, try to go with track lighting or some other surface mount lighting. Recessed lighting seems to be pretty horrible as a means of stopping any kind of sound.. might was well cut the hole and leave it open for all the good the fixture will do :) Unless perhaps you build some kind of inside the room second 'fake ceiling' that was just built for the light fixtures. That might work.

I hate track lighting, but my studio has some for sure, mostly over the console table where I needed light in a narrow band, the width of the room to light the console(s).

In the center of the room, I did install flush-mount lighting into the ceiling, however I used insulated can's which you are allowed to install insulation next to, above, and around the cans. I also boxed those in with a layer of plywood covered in a layer of 1/2" sheetrock, then put non-sealed fiberglass insulation between the boxes I made and the insulated cans. I stapled the fiberglass to the inside of the box, so there is about 4-5" of space between the box I made which is sealed to the room, and the can resting inside it.
