Reason?

Okay.. i'm getting a Powerbook really soon, and I'm considering completely changing the way i make music. Right now I just use a Roland XP-10 run through a guitar processor, controlled by Fruityloops.

Ideally, I want to start making down-tempo trip-hop-esque music with a little bit of synthpop/post-riotgrrl influence.. think Portishead meets Le Tigre meets Ladytron.

What i'm considering is getting rid of the XP10, and investing in Reason and a midiman oxygen8. My question is: is this a bad idea? My only worry about Reason is that because its so self-inclusive, my music will sound like a reason demo or something.. is it possible to make good, original-sounding music with Reason?

I would also like to eventually play live in a different kind of music setup.. with a Reason setup, i could do this with just my laptop and a controller onstage, right?
 
if what you're using to make music right now is fruityloops...I think you'd be happy with the change to reason. I use fruityloops myself, but I only use it for drum tracks and the occational synth, the rest I do with ACID and physical instruments (drums, guitars, bass, keyboards, blah blah)...it sounds to me like the move to reason would be a good one. It's a more powerfull program than fruityloops, and you can do all sorts of stuff with it. and I'm sure you could play live with just your laptop and the controller...some people might find it boring, but screw them if they can't see past that to the musical genius that is you!

oh yeah...goto http://www.propellerheads.se/ and listen to the samples of music people made with nothing but reason, I think you'll see you can make good music with only it and not have it sound like a reason demo.
 
Couldn't you use your XP-10 to trigger your sounds in Reason (I am not familiar with that Roland piece, but as long as it has MIDI OUT and IN, you should be Okay)? :cool:

You can use WAV. files AND SoundFonts in Reason, so as long as your production skills are in order, there shouldn't be a problem of the music sounding like a "demo". :)
 
yeah, I could use the XP10 to control Reason, but its bigger than I really need, and the only controls it really has are two sliders. I'd rather have knobs when working with something like Reason.
Plus, I'm moving into a dorm in a few months, and space'll probably limited. A laptop and an oxygen8 would probably be small enough to be essentially portable, especially because the oxygen8 can take power from the USB of the laptop.

Reason will only sound "inclusive" if you let it. Reason has 2 amazing digital-analog synths which you can tweak to hearts content, creating your own completely original sounds. Plus it has an amazing sampler device (actually 3 of them now) Even if you only use the presets and sound "inclusive" so what? Consider Reason as an instrument, you don't hear people who have Tritons complain about being inclusive, do you? Reason is a lot more dynamic than those machines, plus sounds a heck of a lot better in my opinion. If I buy a guitar, won't it inclusively sound like a guitar? An instrument will have a certain sound.

I have laid down the money for Reason and can't believe what a fine piece of software this thing is. If you are going into electronic/hip - hop music, I'm sure you won't be dissappointed.
