Really obnoxious editing behavior. Can I change it? (images)

I've been noticing this really annoying behavior when editing/moving tracks in Reaper. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

So here's what happens:

Say I have a file with two (or more) tracks and 3 files in each like so:
reaper1.jpg

I end up resizing the files so that there is some overlap (though I get the unintended behavior sometimes even if they don't overlap)
reaper2.jpg

Now, I want to select only the files in the middle.
I click somewhere in the middle (the red dot) of the top file to select it and move the cursor there:
reaper3.jpg

Then I hold shift and click somewhere in the middle of the bottom file (red dot)
reaper4.jpg

You'll notice that this selected not only the files in the range that I selected, but also the files that overlapped them in the front (but not the back).
So now if I'm not paying attention, I may accidentally make modifications to all 4 files even though I only mean to change 2. e.g. resizing:
reaper5.jpg

I find this behavior really unintuitive and annoying. Does anyone know why Reaper selects the files it does when shift+clicking; and more importantly, does anyone know how to change that behavior? Thanks.

I've just tried to replicate your problem, but have not been able to do so. However, you might try CTRL Click rather than Shift click.

Yeah, ctrl does work when it's just 2 track like this example. If you have a lot of tracks, though, shift is easier.

That is weird.. it may have been a bug in v3.11. Why not upgrade to the latest? (v3.75)

You could use right-click+drag to select multiple items.

I was going to say that I've got different versions running on my different computers since my recording machine isn't connected to the net, but no, it turns out they were both running 3.11.

Looks like they fixed that behavior at some point. I should probably read the release notes when the new versions come out, huh?

I read the release notes, but half the time I've got no idea what the mean!

If you were using shift, I'm surprised it didn't select the third track on track 2 as well... how the tracks are "stacked" virtually speaking is unknown, if that makes sense.

I figure that if I can (mostly) understand terms of service, I ought to be able to figure out release notes, right? :D

Yeah. I wonder if they've documented it in the manual somewhere? It seems an obscure detail for someone to have written about though.

I know what you mean. I always line the tracks back to back in such cases. For example, if you need to do something to track 2 and 4, bring track 4 up below 2. When you're done editing them bring track 4 back to its place. Not a solution really, but that's what I do :)
