ok, so this is probably a really obvious question, but I'm just starting out qith MIDI, so here goes . . .

I have a Yamaha PSR -2?? which I borrowed from a friend. I'm trying to use it as a MIDI controller. My friend gave me a cable which runs from the keyboards MIDI ins and outs to a double-ended connecter (male and female), with 15 pins/holes each end.

the only free input I can see in my computer is a male 9-pin input. My mate tells me this is the joystick input (?), which should have a MIDI port in it (??).
I've been looking for a 15 pin to 9 pin adapter, but I can't find one.

what do I need? am I just doing this completely wrong?

There are different styles of cables...I don't think an adapter is what you need. The joystick port on the soundcard I'm recording with (SBLive) has 15 pins, and the cable you are describing would work on it. I have a midiman sound card as well which has the nine pin connector. I think you may just have to find the other style cable....Brian

Arm, Ready, RECORD!!!!!!!!

i could never find a MIDI to serial port connect either, so i assume they don't make them, but i read that Poe uses that in her studio with Protools, so maybe i just got owned, or i don't know where to look.

Most people called it PC joystick/MIDI Kit. You must connect one of the "double-ended connector" to 15 pin Joystick port. Joystick port is usualy right there on your soundcard.

No, it's not joystick port. 9-pin is serial port. Joystick port is 15-pin. They are different kind. You cannot use 15 to 9 pin converter to use the cable. With such cable, you need Joystick port, not serial port. If your motherboard doesn't have MIDI/joystick port, then even cheapest soundcard on radio shack will give you what you need.

Some MIDI gears (Korg, Roland, etc) can be connected to serial port thru special cable. NOT the regular joystick/midi kit. But that deppends on your gears.
