Good point about ranges of instruments ... playing within that range goes right along with the articulation and voicing techniques to get a realistic sound. I have a chart like what you're referring to in an old synthesis book... I think by Devrahi or someone like that.
Of course, when you only have one or two halfway decent string patches to choose from -- as is my case right now -- ya gotta do your best. And all I can say is, none of them are geared to be played as cello or dbl bass! That's why I need something that IS designed to be played down there. I may check out the sampler route, yet. I have some time to decide before I have to put down these types of tracks.
