realistic string sounds

im looking for a module that will provide me with some realistic string sounds (cello, violin, etc). anyone know where i could find such a thing? how much roughly?
 
Although I'm not a string guy, I would go to a good music store like Mars, Guitar Center and sample some of the rackmount synths. Someone here probably knows of a good one.
 
Kurzweil K2000 series with orchestral rom is great. The older EMU Proteus 2 modules have some good sounds but they can be a little thin. The Korg T, O and Triton series have some nice warm orchestra pads.

I've yet to find one module that can do it all. They are each good for different things and blending them all together can yield some great and realistic sounds.

The Denny Yaeger (sp?) sample library is pretty sweet but expensive.

Modual....

I've a Roland M-SE1 strings modual and I've found alot of the patches pretty good....Some need tweaking and some are crap, but over all it's pretty damn nice....and there's some VERY nice synth pads in it too....I got it for about $150 Australian, but I don't know how much they actually are.....Hope that helps...
 
You'll have better luck finding great ensemble sounds rather than solo violins, violas, etc...

Are you looking for hardware, a hardware sampler library, or something withing your computer?

Akai sampler + Peter Siedla(put some strange letters here :) ) Advanced Orchestra. It's not easy to menage the Advanced Orchestra collection (big programs) but the results are great.

And of course even a great library of samples is not going to sound very realistic unless you work your tail off on emulating playing techniques realistically.

A guitar is also full of performance subleties that are hellish to try to fake with a keyboard and some samples, no matter how good the samples are...

Yes, I agree with you. I think the only thing you can do with "realisitc" samples is a realistc sketch before the real thing.

id look at a korg triton, about 1500 bucks, but you get about 600 samples and there are plenty of orchestral samples, whether you want brass, strings, precussion. it also has incredible guitar samples. i love it. http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/575/charles_midi_band.html go there and check out "a dark evening". its a song made from a triton and uses nothing but symphonic samples.

oh yea, The edirol hq-or is awsome!!!!!

I just got it last week and love it. It has strings, woods, brass, precussion.... In each bank it also has solo instruments, and expressive stuff like french horn flares, staccatto, pizzacatto, trombone slides....The works.

Check it out, you won't be dissapointed.

If you're on a budget, the Roland JV1010 module can be found used for 150-200 USD in the online auctions and music stores. It has very warm string ensemble sounds that are very nice. Also, if you could find one (discontinued), the Roland SCP-55 SoundCanvas PCMCIA card has comparable sounds, if you don't mind a PC based module. I'm sure the newer stuff is better, but these units do well for me so far.
