I have this little effect box, a Realistic (radio shack) brand 'reverb' unit, that broke.
Its a shitty little cheap thing that Radio Shack doesnt make any more. But it was extremely useful as an esoteric guitar effect, both for boosting volume (& making my amp feed back like hell, which I loved) and making swoopy delay sounds by rapidly manipulating the sliders. Also by looping it into my four track thru the effects send into the input, I could make an infinite variety of static-y, lo-fi electronic theremin-like noises. I have
a tape filled with such noises. It still works, but the delay sound is nearly inaudible. It lacked was a bypass, so it would be difficult to use in a live application. I wonder if anyone here is familiar with the device,
knows where I could get another (I doubt it cost more than $10-$15 originally) or might be capable of repairing and or modifying it.

Ummmm, maybe you think it is time to invest a coupla' more dollars, dineros, kroners, deuschte marks, swiss francs or whatever and get a REAL efx box oh,like a LEXICON MPX500??
Kill the nostalgic Radio Whack gear and move up to the present time.
If the Lex is a little out of your reach, perhaps a Behringer,ZoomRFX2000 or even an Alesis NanoVerb, might make you 4-get 'bout Radio Whack.
BTW, if you're still tryin' to repair or replace the old efx box try callin' the Tandy Corp in FtWorth,Tex for replacement parts.
Good Luck!

Uhm....

If you read anazgnos post again you see that he didn't use it because it was GOOD but because it was WEIRD. Buying a Lexicon reverb will probably not help... :)

However it sound from what you describe that the "Realistic Reverb" you have is actually a delay unit. At least I can do the things you describe with my analog delays. There are stomp-box delays out there that might be able to do similar things AND give you a bypass function. If you can't find somebody to repair your box, maybe one of those could work. The BOSS DD-3 or DD-5 for example. The DD-5 has hold and reverse modes and stuff you could probably make weird noises with that and your guitar for hours. :) $140 att zzounds.

Might I recommend a little alesis nanothing. A shitty little cheap effect you cannot bypass.

i have an alesis nanoverb, but i liked my little radio shack one. It is labeled as 'reverb', but the effect it provides is in fact a delay with a very short delay time. I found, as i often do, that for its stated purpose it was useless, but I could get interesting sounds by misusing and abusing it. Thus, it broke. Basically, it was so crappy and weird that a more sophisticated device, while it might be useful, wouldn't really take the place of this object.

DD-5

I'm getting one of these bad boys. 5 minutes of playing with it and I was in love at Guitar Center. I played around a little more and I love it. I don't know if it was because I tried the overused demo model, but when I was playing something in one of the lower modes (1-5 maybe?) while turning the feedback (and/or delay time knobs), I was getting some WEIRD ASS noises, it sounded almost like an Atari game. Is this normal for that pedal? If not, I wonder if Guitar Center will sell me that little pedal on the display because man, those noises were fricken sweet. Anyone have this pedal and is this normal?

DD5

I've had a DD5 since june and have not gotten tired of it yet. from settings 1-4 if you change the feedback/delay time while it is repeating you get that kind of torn electric spurt. I thought it was broken at first too. because when you use mode 6 (reverse) you can change the time of delay during repeat and that sound doesn't occur. I've used it in my effects send too(on my tascam 424), I know its a stomp box but it is very clear. it is "digital" as the name states so that coldness is there. If you have 2 amps stereo panning is cool. I wouldn't use it to replace a reverb unit though. Has anyone ever used one of those stereo memory man pedals? I've been looking to give one of those a try.

i got one of those reverb units from radio shack. i used it for a microphone. gost2dp@ptd.net

i have the reverb you're talking about (radio shack stereo reverb system) 3 knobs and a couple of buttons. unfortunately, i'm in love with mine too. it is the strangest, and noisiest reverb i've ever used. years ago, my friends and i used one for rockabilly-ish vocals when we played live. i found one at a thrift store a few years ago, and now use it as a "proper" outboard effect. check every thrift store in your town, as i don't think they're very hard to find. the sound of the reverb is really too trashy for many people to want it, and not cool enough (like a space echo) to be collectible. good luck.

I think MISTERQCUE and I have had this little argument

Well, I hope MISTERQCUE reads this, because you have proven my point with your Radio SHACK "Realistic Reverb" Unit. You said you liked that unit, and it worked for what you were trying to accomplish. I think MISTERQCUE and I went through the same argument about microphones. If it works for your application and you like it, use it.
Ben

P.S. I don't know where you might find another, although I've seen some things on e-bay if you type "realistic reverb" into the search box.

Hey wassupp BennyBob! Yeah man, I guess you're right!
If it works for you stay with it! It's just that I truly believe that ANY $$$$ spent on Radio Whack gear could be put to better use purchasing something a whole lot worthwhile.

when i said that i had one,,and i listed my email address,,
ummmmm..... maybe you could buy it. "U" as in anybody.
gost2dp@ptd.net
i can take a picture of it and send it to u if you wanna make sure its what u want.

I just got one on Ebay

anazgnos--
I've actually been in the market for esoteric reverbia and I checked out this thread a couple of days ago. After a spot of heavy drooling over the rave review chain you started I just couldn't control myself any longer, and I just dun went out an' bought me one of them Realistic bad boys for thirty clams on Ebay! Will be receiving it soon, and I'll let you know how it sounds. May you have similar luck, and thanks!

I just picked up a used Digitech XP-400 "Reberberator" ($140). It has 50 "styles" of reverb covering all the bases, plus it has a volume pedal that allows you to set the level of the reverb from barely there to cavernous. It also has three reverse settings that when doubled up with my DD5 are pretty nuts.

I am about to put this dynamite dirty lil box up on e-bay. BrosRyan@dmv.com

As above but I want too much for it at $30. -JD BrosRyan@dmv.com

I think he's selling it, a bit late to the party... like eleven years
