Real time multitracking?

I am using Cakewalk Home Studio for some basic recording of drums, guitar, bass and vocals. I have an old tascam mixer that I just run straight into the back of my sound blaster. I just do one track at a time. This works fine for me to a point, but I would like to know what I need to purchase (that works with Cakewalk) so I will be able to record four or more tracks simultaneously. Cost and options would be helpful. Thanks.

Opinions differ, but I have had good luck with the MAudio Delta-1010. That will give you 8 analog and two digital ins, along with 8 analog and two digital outs. Around $500-$600. They also make cards with fewer simultaneous ins for less money. I use mine with Sonar.

You need a soundcard that have 4 or more inputs, and perhaps a mic preamp for each input.

I use the Audiotrak INCA88 (it's not very expensive and I think it's great) and a Soundcraft F1 mixing desk. I use the mix as a mic preamp, each of the mic. inputs (using the inserts) on the mix is connected to the inputs on the soundcard. That way, I can record 8 mics or line inputs at a time.

And perhaps you need to upgrade to Sonar. HS2002 only allows a stereo-input to be accessed at a time.
