Does anyone know if the Native Instruments Reaktor and other porgrams are any good? I need something to run a synth program on. See, what I want to do is get a synth program with a lot of sounds on it, and use my keybaord as the midi controller. And the same treatment with my drum machine.
Any help please. No specifics, tight budget. ANything will help. I have an XP equipped computer, need to get a midi + recording adequette sound card - M-Audio 2496? Any other programs with lots of sounds on them, samplers, whatever I need to have my synth on the computer. Or do you guys think it would be better to get one of those modules and use that witha midi controller?
Chris

I would'nt get a module. If you get a sound card/interface with midi like the 2496 and recording software that supports vsti's (most recording software does), then you can control the vsti's with your keyboard. There are tons of freebies that you could play around with before deciding on buying soft synth software.

Hell, if you're really tight, and your current sound card has a joystick port, you could just get a joystick port/midi adapter cable and basic recording software.

Reaktor is GREAT! But you need to understand that it's not just a synth or sampler. Rather it's a modular graphics based programming environment that lets you build your own synths, samplers, groove/beat manipulators, FX. It is highly flexible, but also has a steep learning curve. However, when first starting out, you can download the thousands of ensembles created by other Reaktor users from the Native Instruments Reaktor User Library. In fact, I'd suggest you look here first before deciding to build something as it's likely someone has already done something that might fit what you're looking for. So yea, by getting Reaktor you're not just getting one synth, but you're getting thousands of instruments and FX devices.

so, is reaktor all i need, no other software needed, just get a soundcard and hook up the midi controller? what about the drum machine, will i be able to use my sr-16 as a midi controller as well. does reaktor have drum sounds?
Thanks
Chris

you can use your sr-16 as a controller but you might find that it's pads will limit what you can do. i'd use a cheapo midi keyboard over the sr-16 any day. check out some of the usb keyboards if you don't have midi connections on your current sound card. it's worth getting a decent sound card though for the lower latency and ability to record at 24 bits. also, if you want to be able to record audio, you will need more software.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Reaktor is all you need, although there are people that exclusively use Reaktor both in studio and live... For example Tim Exile's entire set is pretty much based on Reaktor.

There are a lot of drum machines and loop manglers in the Reaktor User Library. Also, don't forget that it has sampler modules so you can load your own drums and other samples in them... However, the sampling in Reaktor is not as streamlined as in Kontakt and other purpose built samplers for example.

What about Cakewalk?

I know that REAKTOR wont record, but I found an auction on ebay for Cakewalk Home Studio 2002. Is this still a good software? It says unlimited midi, and 64 tracks, with fx and other stuff. I plan on getting an M-AUDIO 2496 or that USB equivelant. Anyway, whattaya guys think? Any other low priced recording software options. Running XP with 120 Gig, 512 ram, 1.6 gHz, but no flat screen!!
THanks
Chris

Actually Reaktor WILL record. In fact there are several ways of doing it. One is just using the Tape Recorder module... another is to use the Audio Table module (although that one is more handy for further mangling)... but yeah.

However, it doesn't have full blown DAW/Sequencer facilities. Not that one couldn't build one if they put their mind to it, but what's the point? It would be a resource hog and kinda clumsy in the end anyway.

What i meant by my other post, was, will i need any of those DAW's, and what exactly are these. I just want to know if i can install the software, then install the soundcard, hook up my midi controller, and make music. ANy other nessary things.
And what about Cakewalk Pro Audio 9?
Thanks
Chris
