Does anyone know if there are any shockmounts on the market besides the original one, that'll fit this mic. The original one's ridiculously expensive but I'm not sure about the openings on the RE20's body...can I use a universal mount that touches the side of the mic? Cos the original shockmount looks like it only touches the mic at the back, close to the cable connector.

Anyone know more about this?
 
I just use a standard shockmount that fits my LDCs as well. If you tighten a shure SM57 clip mount tight enough, it will hold the end near the XLR jack, also.
 
if you cover the openings you'll change the polar response. I don't know by how much, but it will be at least slightly different.
 
I dont understand what the shock mount will do for you anyway. If you have it securely in the original clip, and it's not getting whacked by moving hands or arms, why do you need the shock mount anyway? I guess I'm just used to never touching the mics while they are in use......

I think he does not have the original and does not want to pay the high price for a replacement; therefore, he is looking for a cheaper alternative.
 
Well, there is a shock mount, and there is also the original mic clip that screws on to the mic stand.

That's what I mean, I never used a shock mount, I just didn't see the need since my mics are never "handled" while in use the way somebody like a DJ or talk show host might handle it.

The RE20 comes with an original mic clip to screw on to the stand and that clip is unique to the RE20, you have to buy that specific clip if you break the original one. (and from what I hear it does break easily if not mounted correctly, but mine is still intact) I would think the clip alone would be sufficient, without the shock mount, as long as nobody is touching the mic while in use. And the RE20 clip is bound to be a lot cheaper than the shock mount. try www.fullcompass.com, they always beat everyone else's prices.

The RE27 also uses the same clip.
The PL10 use one that is very close, but I think it is a little smaller.

But they are all still EV products.
 
Thanks for responding. I found one on shockmount.com that seems to work.

Btw, do you know if one needs a pop filter for the RE20 when tracking voice overs and spoken word stuff? It has some sort of built-in filter but I'm not sure that's enough. Then again, I guess having one would be nice like anyway but mostly for spit protection. Don't want people's saliva on my precious mic...
 
The shockmount isn't used just to minimize handling noise. For that matter, an RE20 isn't even meant to be handheld. It's all about isolation.

If you're recording in a typical home studio, the floors can transmit footsteps and kick pedal hits up through the mic stand and into the mic. A decent shockmount will take care of that.

There are generic shockmounts available for large mics. They are actually pretty crude but they will provide some isolation.

I don't understand why the big-name mic companies charge so much for their product-specific shock mounts. I guess it's just because they can. Seems like there's an unmet demand for affordable after-market mounts to fit the leading large mics.

P.S. Here's a plug for the Wonder Mount from Red Mic. For $50 this general-purpose mount does a great job with my AKG414. That's a fraction of what an equivalent AKG mount costs. There's also the Ringer from Blue mics. It's kind of a monstrosity but it looks like it might adapt to most any large mic.
