Re-tubing Vox Valvetronix

I was at GC a cople of weeks ago and i played the Valvetronix 2x12 amp (set on AC30 TB) right next to the AC30CC (through the top boost channel) and it sounded VERY different to me. I was using a Gretsch Duo Jet and the Valvetronix was way more fizzy and SS sounding. It just didnt have the girth tonewise as the real thing. Maybe I was setting the Valvetronix wrong but the controls seemed very straighforward.

Just my experience. Tone IS subjective.

I heard you could play a bass through one of those old AC-30s. Is that true?

The 12AX7A RCA Greyplate organ tubes seem to be a nice tube for the money. :)

I just got back into town for a day and am reviewing stuff. I wanted to add that I owned and toured with a 1963 AC30 for over a year. Did that CC have the Blue speakers? Now that my AD120 has the Celestion Blue Speakers, it sounds better than the non-blue AC30's I have heard.

I'm playing all over the place right now, and this amp keeps blowing people away. Its funny. Those blue speakers really put it over the top. Speakers are SO important to an amps tone.

did your's come ex-factory with the "Celestion - taylor made for VOX" speakers? ... or with different ones?

Yeah mine had the Vox - Celestions, not the Neo Dogs they are using in them now. I have the vt, not the vtx model. I like the open back better because the combo amps I like most are open backed (ac30, twin, etc) and I have cabs that are closed back if I need that.
