Hi, first post here and I hope I'm asking it in the right forum. If not, apologies.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of effect Thome Yorke is using in the song 'The eraser' (of the album with the same name). I'd love to be able to do something similar but I can't figure it out. One of the problems is that I can't really describe what it's called as English isn't my native language. This makes searching for tutorials etc. quite difficult.

So if anyone could tell me what the effect is called that he uses on the drum track? You can hear it most clearly about 25 seconds into the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb1oge5nHQk. Especially on the snare.

It's kind of a noisy/gritty effect. I've tried using mild distortion or adding white noise, but to no avail (yet).

I use reason for the most part, but I've been trying Reaper as of late so I could use a VST if I have to.

Again, I hope this is the right place, if not I would gladly hear where I could ask my question.

Thanks!

Sounds less like an effect than how the sound was originally made. I think is was made with something like a brush or Pro-Mark Hot Rod rather than a stick. And it sounds sampled and looped rather than played though the song.
